Dusky Conures

Dusky conures can make lovely pets and companions. They are small and attractive parrots and are clever birds. My dusky conure was called Cece. She was a member of my family for many years. I got her from a breeder when she was a youngster. She was an affectionate bird and became a great friend, but she did have her feisty moments,

.Wild dusky conures live in South America. Pet birds breed well in captivity. They are mainly green in color but have a grey or blue-grey head. The abdomen and part of the wings may be yellow and the edges of the wings and tip of the tail may be a beautiful blue color. The birds have a white ring around the eyes, and their beak is black. Adult dusky conures are about eleven inches long.

My Dusky Conure

Cece is the only conure that I have ever owned. Many sources say that dusky conures are sweet Clever, calm and relatively quiet compare to other conures. Who are generally noisy birds. Cece is clever and often very sweet too when she is in the mood but she was sometimes the opposite of calm and quiet. She was strong will and was very assertive at times. She had a loud call, but she also made gentle chirping sounds when she was happy and relaxed.

Cece love to perch on me and walk over my clothes. She liked to investigate everything that I did. Since she try to help herself to my food I put her on a perch attach to her cage while I was eating. Sometimes she decided to relax and preen her feathers while she perched on me. At other times she decided to nestle under my clothes. She often became silent and motionless when she settled under my sweater or shirt. I had to remember that I was carrying an invisible bird around so that she didn’t get hurt by my movements.

The Dusky Conure

The Dusky Conure became freely available in the 1980s, when Bolivia allow export of parrots; its range extends across five countries. Colombia, Ecuador Peru Bolivia and Brazil in the western Amazon basin, where it is found primarily in open areas. On first reaching aviculture, they were inexpensive and tended to be overlook for more valuable, colorful species. This resulted in few breeders paying attention to them. When one takes into consideration the numbers import this species should be commonly produce but alas this is not the case. It was shun and today it can be describe as uncommon. My hope is that this situation will slowly change in time. Because as an aviary bird it is quiet, undemanding and breeds well—all the attributes breeders seek.

Dusky Conures can be fed a seed

Dusky Conures can be fed a seed mix diet (small sunflower, safflower, buckwheat, milo, small popcorn, assorted millets, oats, etc) or pellets. These should comprise no more than 70% of the diet, though they can be fed a ration that includes both pellets and seeds, preferably offered separately and on alternate days to insure that they do not favor one over the other. In addition, they should be offer greens (kale, escarole, endive, chicory, spinach), beta carotene rich vegetables (steamed carrot, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and squash) and other vegetables (corn, peas, blanched broccoli, partly cooked beets, zucchini, hot peppers, etc). I do not recommend feeding fruits in all but extreme moderation because wild parrots have not evolved for feeding on the sugar packets that have come most fruits sold today in stores.
